Our final concert takes us on a journey through a full century of the greatest German music from the early 1800s to the early 1900s. With one of his most well-loved string quartets – the Harp, op. 74 – we see how Beethoven was largely responsible for the move toward the Romantic period. Robert Schumann represents the Romantic period fully formed. One of his greatest examples of Romantic music is the Piano Quartet, op. 47. Rounding out the German century are songs by the great late-Romantic Richard Strauss. His songs represent some the finest and most compelling examples of the art song or Lied. These songs will feature the of our young vocal artists. This year's composer-in-residence program will conclude with William Weigel's Intermezzo for Flute and Piano featuring fellow Minnesota native, flautist Judith Mendenhall.
